It’s hard to get my thoughts in order when talking about our marine life. The threats are just too many and, i feel like we’re witnessing their demise in slow motion. The algal blooms, possible collapse of ocean currents, coral bleaching, over-fishing, dredging, off-shore extractions and the list goes on. There are so many Red List marine animals i have on my ‘to paint list’ i could spend my life doing them.
The first one of many is the Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus), the largest living fish. It is also endangered and on the Red List. It has seen over 50% decline in the last 75 years.
This is an original painting on recycled mdf board i saved from going to landfill. I used modelling materials to lift the whale shark off the board slightly and acrylic paint, including metallic acrylic to add a bit of that ocean sparkle. Thanks to this, the painting changes depending on the light.
