The blue emperor butterfly (Papilio ulysses) is an extraordinary butterfly native to Queensland, Australia. Its wingspan can reach over 10cm.
It has once been endangered and placed on the Red List but efforts to save it by planting trees it uses to lay eggs saved it and it is now thriving.
I love this story as it goes to show that humans can turn things around. We can help so many endangered animals come back from the brink.
I painted this on recycled mdf board using acrylic colours and modelling paste to lift the butterfly wings, creating a 3d effect. I also used metallic paint for the wings.
