On my daily walks in the bush i often come across incredibly interesting plants. They look magical and i love immortalizing them in paintings.

The flowers featured in the ‘Flowers of the mountains’ have all been spotted on a trail in Hazelbrook, Blue Mountains and i have included the original photos i took of them. It is summer and not much is flowering at this time so, it was such a treat to even see these beauties. First, i found adorable mini Flannel flower clusters. They and the surroundings were the original inspiration for this painting. Right next door were yellow Goodenias, adding lovely colours to the bush. And only a few steps away, i spotted little queens with green crowns (Bauera rubioides). A stream flows along the path and because it’s warm, i start walking in it. It feels like a fairytale and i indeed find something magical- Fairy Aprons (Utricularia dichotoma). They are tiny, smaller than my pinky nail. It is my biggest dream to, one day, be able to recreate habitats like these where they have been torn down.

To make the identification easier, i have written the names and location on the back of the canvas.

The entire process took about 2 months. I first primed and painted the base on the cotton canvas. I wanted this painting to have a green, leafy feel. The next layer were background plants. Behind my main stars, the flowers, were equally beautiful shrubs, ferns and other plants. I mainly focused on Leptospermums, various leaves and some ferns. The modelling paste helped lift the woody branches and leaves. Now i shifted my focus on the flowers. At first, i only wanted to paint the tiny flannel flowers but have later decided to include the others to add a bit of colour. I used plain modelling paste and petal by petal, started to create the flowers. Making tiny petals and leaves was the most labour intensive part of creating this painting. Just a few flower heads took hours. The petals had to fully cure overnight before i could add the centers. Once done, i’ve coated each petal, each center and each leaf with two to three layers of acrylic paint. Although, it would be easier to mix the paste with colour, i feel the final product is much more vivid when coating the cured paste instead. Many flower petals naturally sparkle in the sun and so i also used a bit of metallic acrylic to add some shine. It makes an interesting twinkle from different angles and when the sun hits the painting.
